Peacekeeping (2010, No. 9)

The 30th IFUW Conference resolves that:

  1. IFUW re-affirm Resolution 2007/N°8 calling for IFUW, through its representatives at the United Nations, to argue that increased training in sensitivity to gender issues and women’s and children’s rights be given to all UN peacekeeping personnel; and consequently IFUW urge that the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution (SCR) 1325 be strictly enforced, particularly with regard to giving women an enhanced role in peacekeeping contingents; and IFUW through its representatives at the United Nations, urge the implementation of UNSCRs 1820, 1882, 1888 and 1889.

Suggested National Action

  • Monitor progress at national level on the implementation of UN SCR 1325,1820,1882,1888 and 1889.
  • Encourage the creation and updating of databases of qualified women for decision-making posts related to peace processes.
  • Encourage your government to develop national action plans with timetables and benchmarks for actual progress, to ensure the implementation of these resolutions.

  • Canada: CFUW active in monitoring the UN 1325 National Action Plan February 2012 Action in support of IFUW Policy Resolution 2010, No.09 The Canadian Federation of University Women is one of the founders of a new civil society entity that will be working to promote and monitor the implementation of the National Action Plan on U.N. 1325. This will be done by:
  • Contacting women Members of Parliament to share information and promote awareness about U.N. 1325
  • Contacting the Foreign Affairs Committee to share information and promote awareness about U.N. 1325
  • Contacting government officials to tell share information and look for potential areas of collaboration. These efforts will help build the political support needed to keep U.N. 1325 in the forefront. Read More

 

  • Canada: CFUW Advocates for Afghan Women at the Bonn Negotiating Table October 2011 Action in support of IFUW Policy Resolution 2010, No.09 In December 2011 the international community will come together in Bonn, Germany for the Second Afghanistan Conference. The Conference is expected to focus on three issues: the civil aspects of the transition process transferring responsibility to the Government of Afghanistan by 2014, the long-term engagement of the international community in Afghanistan after 2014 and,the political process that should lead to a long-term stabilization of the country. It is essential that Afghan women’s voices be heard in this process. The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) has sent a strong letter urging their Government to call for the presence of Afghan women at the negotiating table at the meeting in Bonn.   • Georgian University Women to assist the peace process with Abkhazian and Ossetia December 2010 Action taken in support of IFUW Policy Resolution 2010, No. 09 Georgian University Women are involved in peace negotiation processes with Abkhazian and Ossetian NGO representatives and leaders to produce a better understanding of peace processes concerning opposing sides of areas of conflict. They will be creating new women’s groups with members from Caucasian republics (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Russia) in order to establish a platform for Caucasian women to discuss gender and conflict resolution issues. Read More

 

  • Australia: AFGW asks Government for evidence of action in the development of a National Action Plan to implement Security Council Resolution 1325 September 2010 Action taken in support of IFUW Policy Resolution 2010, No. 09 The Australian Federation of Graduate Women (AFGW) has written to its Prime Minister to enquire on actions taken by the Australian Government to develop an National Action Plan (NAP) for Security Council Resolution 1325.
