Thailand: Non-Formal Education Project
Thai Association of University Women
The “Non-Formal and Continuing Education Project” of the Thai Association of University Women aims to improve the quality of life of women and children. It provides training in the form of seminars and workshops for many different groups of women in the areas of health care, income generation, culture, literacy, numeracy and information technology.
The project is wide-reaching providing training for professional and career women to develop their careers, identifying and training local women leaders to serve their communities, and providing basic education courses for those who have missed out on a formal education. A network of teachers has been formed to cooperate with the non-formal and continuing education committee of the Thai Association of University Women.
2008 activities included:
- Five workshops on nursery education for teachers, nursery owners and child carers. The workshops were held in Bangkok and covered management and
- Teaching skills, as well as providing training for those wishing to run their own child care centers.
- Five study visits to award-winning schools in Bangkok for teachers and administrators. This was organised with the collaboration of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Social and Human Development and has provided valuable in-service training that would not otherwise be available.
- Publication of 3,000 copies of a cookbook entitled, “Thai Cooking & Thai Culture”. Many women collaborated in the production of this book, collecting and trying out traditional recipes and demonstrating how to cook typical Thai dishes. The sale of the book will generate enough income to allow this project activity to continue and will also help to preserve Thai culture and traditional cuisine.
