Addressing Climate Change – Greenhouse (Open)

The 30th GWI Conference resolves that:

1. GWI and its National Federations and Associations (NFAs) urge their respective governments to act immediately to create national climate action plans that would: (a) set strong short-term targets for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions; (b) reaffirm their commitments to implement signed international agreements on climate change, ratify the successors to such agreements, and work to achieve international reductions in greenhouse gas emissions; and (c) provide ongoing support for research and education concerning all aspects of climate change.

Suggested National Action

• Urge your government to act immediately to create a comprehensive national climate action plan that includes the targets and mechanisms included in this resolution, and to include women in the planning, decision-making, implementation and follow-up processes.
• Monitor the progress of your government and hold it to account in implementing and achieving the national climate action plan.
• Urge your government to provide support for research and education on climate change, including its impact on women.
• Set up study and action groups within your own country on the effects of climate change.

• Georgian University Women to discuss a national climate action plan December 2010Action taken in support of GWI Policy Resolution 2010, No. 07

  Georgian University Women, in cooperation with its partner organization Healthy World, will discuss a national climate action plan in order to implement activities concerning a healthy way of life, climate change and genetically modified food.

• The Australian Federation of Graduate Women (AFGW) writes to government to support the foundation blocks for international climate agreement October 2010Action taken in support of GWI Policy Resolution 2010, No. 07

  AFGW was pleased to hear recent statements from its Minister for Climate Change and Energy efficiency confirming its government’s commitment to act on climate change. AFWG has written to request that its government support foundation blocks for international climate agreement as climate change is a global agreement which needs a global response. AFWG also urged its government to continue to engage in the UN climate change negotiations and help build the foundations necessary for a fair, ambitious and legally binding global agreement by supporting the establishment of a new global fund for climate finance under the guidance of the UN. They wished to ensure that the governance of this fund enables the poorest and most vulnerable communities get assistance to adapt to the impacts of climate change and ensure that funding previously committed for this is not diverted from critical poverty programs. They also encouraged their government to raise money to tackle climate change, outline a program for investment in renewable energy and develop a strategy that ensures that domestic carbon emissions peak by 2015 then rapidly decline.
