El Salvador: Multi-Functional Medical Clinic
Asociación de Mujeres Universitarias de El Salvador
The “Multi-Functional Medical Clinic” run by the El Salvador Association of University women provides a vital community health service in a low-income area of San Salvador. The clinic is open 6 days a week from 8am until 4pm and is staffed by members of the association including a doctor, a dentist, a laboratory technician, a pharmacist and a secretary. Patients pay only a small fee for consultations and medications. More than 150 people a week use the clinic, many of these women and children.
A dental-care outreach programme organised by the clinic visits adjacent communities and schools giving instruction in dental care and free treatment.
The goal in 2008 was to continue providing these health care services to the needy people of the community and to expand services to include low-cost or free medications, blood pressure monitoring, and dental check-ups. Prevention courses on drug abuse, teenage pregnancy, dental care were given at local high schools as well as some vocational guidance courses.
